SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

Another westerly depression has moved on to tho Dominion, and has deepened considerably since last night. Consequently, westerly or north-westerly winds have predominated and have become strongl generally, reaching gale force in places about' and to the south of Cook Strait. Except-for some scattered showers in Westland and Fbvoaux Strait,'the weather was mainly fair to Dne yesterday. Since last evening, however, fairly general rain has occurred, in the western and southern portions of the South Island, heavy falls having been recorded at some places. This morning it was raining in Wellington, but over most of the North Island and in the eastern districts of the South Island fair and dry weather was still in evidence.
