A NARROW ESCAPE
LEVEL-CROSSING SMASH
(By Toleernph.—Press Association.) CHEISTCHUECH, This Day. Mr. J. E. McKenzie, the well-known business man and trotting owner, had a narrow escape at tho Middleton railway crossing last night when the back of his motor-car was struck by a train. The vehicle was considerably damaged, but Mr. McKenzie received only slight injuries. Trees obscured his view of the crossing. , . ■ Mr. McKenzie states that ho was only 12 yards from the line when he first saw the train. He knew that if he braked the car it would stop on the line, and he accelerated, but tho engine stalled and the train struck the car at the rear, being carried 20 yards down the line and pushed through a fence. The back wheels were broken, and a portion of tho bodywork crumpled. Mr. McKenzie suffered a bruised shoulder.
