FERRY AND BUS TRAFFIC
The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. S. F. Fisher) presided, 'and there were also present Councillors J. F. Bockstrow, E. N. Battersby, Margaret Magill, «-. Jarncy, W. F.'Hornig, C. A. Bendle, and E. W. Wise* The Eastbourno'Ladies' Hockey Club requested the use of the northern end of the recreation ground, and for the same travelling privileges as "the members of the football club received. It was decided to grant these privileges, which apply only to city members of the club coming to Eastbourne^ In the opinion of the council the ground wanted was too rough for hockey, and power was given to the Mayor and the chairman of the "Works Committeo to act after a discussion on the question with representatives of the ' hockey club. ■ "The deplorable condition" of Bona Street was the subject of a letter from a resident who complained that it was dangerous for traffic. ."Totara Street is in the same condition. All the hill streets get the- same" way," remarked Councillor Magill. The council decided to patch Bona Street. A letter was received from Mr. W. H. Dick, chairman of the Muritai School Committee, drawing attention to the danger of rocks wh;ch wcro rolling through the fence into the infants' playground. It was complained that young pohutukawas had been broken and the fence damaged. Tho council decided to. remove the boulders. Permits for three buildings of a total value of £.155 were issued in March. The sanitary inspector reported that no case of infectious disease was notified in'the borough in March. Traffic returns for March, with figures for March 1932 in parentheses, were presented as follows:—i-T.S.S. Muritai: Number of passengers carried, 23,644 (24,418); number of round trips, 48 (47); total distance steamed, 720 miles (705); oil fuel used, 28.7 tons (28). S.S. Cobar: Number of passengers carried, 19,095 (17,560); number of round trips, 162 (146); total distance steamed, 2430 miles (2190); coal used, 68 tons (61). During tho month the buses ran 17.30,0 miles and used 1749 gallons of benzine.
