VOLUNTEER DEFENCE

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 15th July. Tho contributions collected in Nelson on Poppy Day this year arc being spent on the first work of a mudflat reclamation scheme between Halifax street and Auckland Point. This section has been an eyesore at Nelson's "front door," and the work will make a long-ck-sircd improvement. About 25 men arc employed at present.

The recruiting' of officers and men ! under tlio new voluntary defence system is now proceeding in Nelson, aud tho early response of 50 recruits is considered satisfactory, and an indication that the full strength of 229 will be secured for the Infantry Eegiment, which will have its headquarters here. The Headquarters Wing and two Vickers gun platoons will also be drawn from Nelson. Last night ah enthusiastic meeting of those interested in the voluntary system was held, and a number of names were handed in for recruiting.

Tho annual Past v. Present match between Nelson College and old students played this afternoon, was won by the present scholars by 18 points to 14.

Lato this afternoon the Nelson Fire Brigade received a call to the old Cathedral vicarage at the corner of Collingwood and Nile streets, where flames wero issuing frdm the gable. The prompt action of passers-by had the flames under control when the brigado: arrived. The1 house, which is a large wooden one, .is how owned by Mr. A. Wilkinson, of Tamanga, and is occupied by Mr. George Richardson. As a sequel to a motor accident at i tho Port, William T. Eigby was charged at the-Magistrate's Court with (1) being drunk while in charge of a motor-car; and (2) driving without a licence. Messrs. C. M. Collins1 and W. Black, Justices, were on the Bench. On the first charge the defendant was':fined £5, and prohibited from obtaining a licence for 13 months, conditionally upon taking out a prohibition, order; and on the second charge a fine of 10s was imposed, with costs 10s. The Nelson Automobile Association, with its much increased membership, has appointed, its first road patrol. Miss A. Glover and Miss I). Paulmeir, of the Nelson Public Hospital nursing staff, were successful at the recent State examination for maternity nursing. The first-named .passed with1 distinction. . The following officers were elected at the annual meetiag of the Nelson Regiment Garrison Band: President, Mr. Chas. Leaper; secretary, Bandsman H. Wilkins; treasurer, Sergeant W. W. Lock; committee, Sergeant Keed, Bandsmen J. Haase, B. Whitwell,-N. Whitwell, G. Oldershaw; custodian, Bandsman S. Haase; Drum-Major, Bandsman A. J. Bennett; conductor, Lieut. T. H. Hughes; bandmaster, Sergeant G. W. Hughes; hon. auditor, Mr. O. J. Mullins. Lance-Corporal N. Whitwell was promoted to corporal; and Bandsmen T. H. Hughes and S. Haase to lance-corporals. The band decided to compete at the Wellington Contest, to be held in February, 1932.
