A 'very largo gathering-'of..residents and friends attended the fourth birthday.l party ■of the; 'Wainui-o-nmta, Women's Institute; The public hall was prettily decorated, and an excellent programme;"was presented. Songs by Mesdames White and Boyes, elocutionary items by Mrs. Edgar Burdan and Miss Burdan, a clever step-dance by Mr. Pat. Tomey, and a cornet solo by Mr. Boyee delighted the audience. Two playsfollowed,; the first by six little,, children, who! acted the old nursery rhyme, "Ding Dong Bell." This was well staged, the old well :boing the centre of the play. "Pussy" was hauled out by '' Jottnie Stout," an A "Bo Peep," * 'Miss Muffet," "Marjorie Daw,"' •*'Mary Mary Quite Contrary," and- "Jack Spratt," _ all dressed to character, were a delight to see. The children spoke their parts well, and grout credit is due to Miss Drumraond, who' trained them. The second play, acted by Institute members, entitled '.'Tho Village Shop," proved very humorous, :md sxs "Mrs.'Clarkson,"'tho post-mistress, Mi?s Drummond was a great success. Mrs. White as **Mis.
Bickerdyke" (the grand dame) and Miss K. Drummoiid as "Scliiia" (the shop girl) were extremely good, while Mrs. Wdod as "Mrs. Dodd," Miss Prouso as "Miss Poole," and Miss M. White and B. Bnrdan as "Mr. and Mrs. Newly wed," made the most of their parts. A delicious supper was served, a feature being tho large birthday cake made by the president (Mrs. Lcn. Wood), and beautifully decorated by Mrs. E. Dick. Dancing followed, and a very happy time was spent by all
present. The monthly-meeting of the Wainui-o-mata Institute was held in the Public Hall recently. Despite the very wet day, there was a good attendance of members to meet a party from the Pioneer Club, Institute Circle, and all were interested in a demonstration by Mrs. Bule, who showed art silk work. She also demonstrated how to make a vase decorated with roses from raffia. This piece;of work was much admired, A' jolly,, game of musical chairs followed, the winner being Mrs. W. Burdun. Afternoon tea was dispensed, the hostesses being Mesdames Heathcote, Haddy, Battary, and MaeGowan. A very hearty voto of thanks to Mrs. Bule for the pleasure the demonstration had given concluded the meeting.
