ELECTORAL ROLLS

WELLINGTON FIGURES

The main electoral rolls are now closed, but the supplementary rolls now. in course of preparation will considerably increase the totals. Tho main rolls for the Wellington electoral districts have closed with the following figures, the figures for 1928 being also given. Tho 1928 figures are for the complete roll, main and supplementary combined, hence the totals are in most cases larger than those of this year's main roll. ' * ' \ 1931 1928 Wellington North' .. 12,498 14,046 Wellington Central . 12,918 14,635 Wellington East .. 14,860 14,541 Wellington South .. 12,637 13,339 Wellington Suburbs 15,585 14,751 The Hutt figures are not yet available. Tho figures for 1928 wore 16,252, and a big increase is expected. The Otaki roll closes with 9056 names, as against 8785 in 1928.. It is apparent from the Wellington figures that there is a steady tendency for ,tho population to gravitate towards the suburbs, tho gain in Wellington East and Wellington Suburbs being at the expense of Wellington North, Central, and South. It will bo found, too, when the figures are available, that tho Hutt electorate has absorbed a number from other Wellington electorates.

The date of the closing of the supplementary rolls depends on the date fixed for tho ensuing General Election, but it is well to remind electors that since 1925 enrolment has beon compulsory. The Act passed that year provides ■ penalties for those who, when qualified to do so, fail to enrol.
