CHORAL UNION

SUCCESSFUL SEASON

The twenty-sixth annual report of the Royal Wellington Choral Union states that at the last concert of the season ("The Messiah"), the chorus probably reached the highest standard it has attained in choral work. This was most favourably commented upon by both Press and public. In this oratorio the | society had the assistance of the Commercial Travellers' Male Choir and the Levin Choral Society, to whom the society's sincere thanks are tendered. In addition to the usual year's work, the union assisted the Society of Musicians for Music Week during August, 1930. At this festival parts 1 «nd 2 of "Hiawatha" were performed. The continued high musical standard maintained by the society during the year, the report states, reflects the greatest credit on the conductor (Mr. John Bishop). The interest and enthusiasm shown by Mr. Bishop since his arrival from London, combined with his undoubt-1 ed ability, have been responsible for the excellent musical result attained. The society's finances continue to be very satisfactory, the excess of assets over liabilities being £1688 3s Bd. During the year the society paid a visit to New Plymouth and combined.with the Xew Plymouth Choral Society in Hie production of "Hiawatha," under the conductorship of Mr. John Bishop, who acted ;is guest conductor. This performance undoubtedly stimulated great interest in New Plymouth. The report concludes with complimentary reference to the honorary secretary, Mr. W. J3. Caldow, whose organising ability and capacity for hard work are such a valuable asset to the society.
