ARREST ON MARAMA
ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 18th February. On tho arrival at Sydney yesterday of the intercolonial steamer, Marama, from New Zealand, detectives went on board and arrested Edward Louis Schneider, aged 36, on a charge of false pretences at Auckland. The warrant upon which Schneider was arrested was issued by the Auckland police, and the charge was that on 12th December, at Auckland, with intent to defraud, he obtained from James O'Neill Hewitt £100 by falsely representing that he had a large business and was making huge profits. Schneider appeared later in the Police Court in Sydney and was remanded until 26th February, pending the arrival of an escort from New Zealand. On Friday next a Wellington constable will leave for Sydney with the original warrant, and he will ask that Schneider be extradited to Auckland. This morning the Auckland police stated that they had received 18 complaints from persons who alleged they had boon defrauded of sums ranging from £60 to £250 by Schneider. The total amount involved is alleged to be over £1000. Schneider is an Australian who recently spent four or fire months in Auckland.
