A HELPING HAND

The Island Bay Life-saving and Surf Club executive will hold a dance oa Saturday in aid of the Earthquake Fund. The Majestic Dance Band will supply the music, and there will be several surprising novelties, followed by a supper. It is hoped that there will be a large attendance at the Masonic Hall, Humber street, Island Bay. The Lyall Bay Home and School Association will hold a dance in the Katea Hall, Onepu road, ou 2nd March, to assist the local effort for funds. The free use of the hall for the occasion has been granted by the proprietor (Mr. B. JVH. Ockenden), and Mr. Chris. Parsons, 0 of Kilbirnio, is to supply the orchestra without charge. The Evans Bay Yacht and Motorboat Club has given its picnic funds, about £5, to tho relief funds. Messrs. Fairbairn, Wright, and Co. have received a cable from Messrs. E. Griffith Hughes,, Ltd., Manchester, England, for whom they act as New Zealand agents, stating that they have subscribed one hundred guineas to the New Zealand Earthquake Fund through the High Commisioner for New Zealand, in London. The Eotorua Earthquake Belief Fund is now £1127, including the "Chronicle's" list of £456 (states a Press Association telegram). Large supplies of clothing, goods, and comforts also have been sent by car to the' earthquake areas. The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night unanimously carried a resolution that the Government be requested to allow as deductions for income tax purposes all contributions to tho earthquake relief fund made by companies or individuals (states a Press Association telegram.). Messrs. Townsend and Paul, Ltd., of Wellington, have received the following instructions from the C. D. Hubbard Fruit Co., of Carpenteria, California:—"Give 20 cases lemons or equivalent in money to earthquake sufferers." The twenty cases of lemons have beon forwarded to Commissioner Cunningham, of the Salvation Army, the value being approximately '£40.
