IN UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

( THE STATE SUBSIDY

Information furnished to the member for Avon, Mr. D. Or. Sullivan, by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. W. B. Taverner) shows that since Ist April this year the Government has paid £47,285 to local bodies by way of subsidy. ■ The Wellington district was the largest beneficiary, having received £26,----911. Auckland had received £1277. Christchureh £8815, Dunedin £9676, and Invercargill £606. Details of subsidies to local bodies in. the Wellington district are as follow:— . £ Wellington City Council 21,700 Petone Borough Council 1,30S Eastbourne Borough Council .. 200 Upper Hutt Borough Council.. 720 Lower Hutt Borough Council .. 2,983 Total . £26,911 Mr. Taverner also pointed out that a total of £5180 had been raised by the Forbury Park Trotting Club for unemployment relief a a sperial meeting, the Auckland Trotting Club's special meeting realising £ 7494. Government taxes were remitted in both instances. The number of men employed by the four chief city councils on relief works was given as follows:—Auckland 20, Wellington 478, Christchurch 29, Dunodin 54. The Wellington City Council has also provided work for 220 returned soldiers through the Eeturued Soldiers' Association, and not placed through the Labour Bureau.
