FOOTBALLERS IN SMASH
THREE MEN IN HOSPITAL

Returning from Sandon, where they had played a Sandon team, a party of fiangiotu footballers, in a five-seater car, driven by Mr. Joseph Evans, collided with a motor-cyclist on . one of the corners near Mount Stewart, about 12 miles from Palmerston North, on tho main road to Wanganui, about 5.30 on Saturday afternoon. As a result of the collision the following were admitted to tho Palmerston North Public Hospital this evening : — Alfred Hickey, aged 23, single, Civil servant, attached to the Peilding Post Office, suffering from a doubly fractured jaw and shock. Joseph Evans,; 22, single, of Rongotea, a farmer, ' suffering from head abrasions aud a broken arm. Phillip Gerald Fitzgerald, aged 42, a married man. A man named Bainessc, • a labourer, is suffering from head and hand abrasions. Two other oecupauts of the car were also taken to the Palmerston North Hospital by the ambulance, but after receiving attentiqn they were allowed to leave. Their names were not available. • ■ i Mr. Hickey was motor-cycling to-' ward Sandon, -where ho had been previously stationed, on'his way. to visit some friends. ; Messrs. Hickey, Evans, Fitzgerald, and two other occupants of the car were quickly taken to the Palmerston North Public Hospital, Mr. .'Hickey being admitted in an unconscious state, and very seriously injured. There was no improvement in Mr. Hickey's condition this afternoon. Messrs. Evans and Fitzgerald were not in any danger.
