COLD IN CANTERBURY
SNOW PALLS: ON HILLS
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHRISTCHUBCH, This Day. Heavy enowfalls on. the Alps and lighter falls over the foothills have brought chilly weather to Canterbury. Rain over most parts of Canterbury on Saturday night will help the growth of winter feed in tho pastures, which up till recently were very parched through the prolonged spell of dry weather! -■ : Tho cold south-west wind which brought the rain also left'a thick coating of anpw on the Southern Alps and on the foothills almost to their base. The Mount Herbert rang© of tho Port Hills also shared in tho'.fall of snow. The rainfall for the twenty-four.' hours ended at 9 aim. yesterday was .2 inches. The; weather cleared early this morning, and. there was bright sunshine. A slight wind off the snow kept the atmosphere chilly, and it is likely that while- tho snow remains frosts will bo heavier than the one of 3.4 degrees experienced yesterday morning. ;;. Fiftytwo points of rain fell at Ashburton during the twenty-four hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday. There was heavy rain on Saturday afternoon aild night. Heavy rain also fell in the Methvcn district lato on Saturday afternoon, and there was a fall of snow in the township. The snow lay all uight in spite of the wet ground,' and yesterday morning thoro was a very seVero ; frost. The hills and mountain* nearby received a liboral coating ' of white right down to their base. 1 Heavy rain was also experienced at Rangiora last night, and yesterday morning the hills towards Loburn and Oxford wore white. Tho rainfall totalled 26 points. Nearer the foothills, at Oxford} the rainfall was 89 points for the twenty-four hours ended at 9 a.m. To-day there .was a light fall of snow; in the Oxford county, and a heavy fall on: the hills beyond.
