"INTO THE FIELD EAKLY"
"Let us get into the field early instead of having to seramblo at the last minute for funds as has been necessary in a great number of cases in the past," said Mr. H. Austad, at last evening's meeting of the Council of the Now Zealand Amateur Athletic . Association, when consideration was being given to the question of sending athletic representatives to the British Empire Games in Canada next August. At the outset Mr. L. A. Tracy (lion, secretary) said R. A. Rose was definitely not available. "I think it is high time we got really busy," said Mr. Austad. "To-night I would like to see a selection committee appointed and telegrams sent out to the centres inviting nominations, to be in hand not later than 10th of this month. The Selection Committee could ■■ announco the team to the council on the 12th, and then we could go right ahead getting the money together." NO CYCLE EVENTS. Mr. Tracy said that there were no cycling events at the Einpiro Games, so it would be no uso sending F. Grose, of Canterbury, holder of the three New Zealand cycle championships. ■ Mr. G. S. Bright: "Are you absolutely sure of that?" Mr. Tracy said that although provision may be made for cyclists at the Olympic Games, there would be no cyclo events at tho Empire Games. It meant, then, that Rose, Grose, and D. Evans (who was debarred from competing in view of the fact that he is a re-instated professional) could be eliminated. That left, in his opinion, S. A. Lay, P. Munro, and G. Sullivan (Wanganui-Tara-naki), who won the hop, step, and jump at the Now Zealand championship meeting. In reply to a suggestion by Mr. Tracy that consideration might perhaps bo given to tho selection of the team at once, Mr. Austad said ho thought tho best plan was to get nominations from the centres ■ first. Mr. Bright said he thought it was rather unfortunate that there were no cyclo events at the Games for Grose. His performances at tho New Zealand championships placed him in the championship class, He suggested that consideration might be given to sending Grose to Australia next season, so that he, would bo able to have a try-out on the board tracks. It was practically certain that the cycle events at the next Olympic Games would be on board tracks. It was decided to ask the centres for nominations as suggested by Mr. Austad, and a selection committed, comprising Messrs. Guy, Austad, and Tracy, was appointed to consider the nominations. Tho council hopes to be able to announce its selection within a few days of the receipt of the nominations.
