SALAMANCA ROAD

(To the Editor.) Sir,—lt is not surprising that complaints have appeared in the "Evening Post"' regarding the unsatisfactory state of Salamanca road, and it is incredible that the council should allow it to remain in this state. Some years ago there was a bad motor accident just below the tramway bridge, which resulted in loss of life, and I fear that if. the road is not put into proper order very shortly we will have a further similar occurrence. It i'a no use endeavouring to traverse the faults of the road, as it is probably worse than any road in the far backblocks of New Zealand. 'Why it should be left in that state goodness only knows. Anysettling that was required has taken place ages ago and one can easily point to the lower end of., Salamanca road which received attention and was completed in a very short period. I travel around tho city and suburbs a good deal and am unaware of any main road or secondary road which in any degree approaches tho bad condition of Salamanca road.'On the other hand I am aware of little streets here and there that have received attention for some obscure reason. Is it because several councillors live in that locality? It is not only the residents of the locality who are suffering ■ owing to tho bad condition o£ the road but all the pedestrians and others who use it, and they blame tho local residents for not agitating to have the road put in order. But what more can wo do? We have waited upon the Council and pointed out the deficiencies of the road, and we were received courteously, and although no promises were made, we left with a reasonable hope that something would be done to rectify the position. Months have gone by since, but practically nothing has been done except some loose road metal strewn over which lias redered■ tho road much more unsafe for pedestrians and vehicular traffic. I join with your previous correspondents in urging upon the council to pay a visit to the road and see for . themselves, how necessary it is to place it in order before the coming winter.—l am,i SALAMANCA ROAD NO. 3.
