AT OPAKI

MASTERTON CUP TO HISTORIC

MANDY WINS WELL

By Telegraph from "Vedette." The weather was perfect-for the Masterton Club's opening day yesterday, but only a fair crowd attended. The track was very hard. The lota I Jailor returns were £12,963, against £13,170 last year.. Historic made light of his 0.7 in the . Masterton Cup. He forced his way through the lenders about a. furlong from home, making them look very cheap by comparison. He was a. class or Imore above the rest. The open sprint, event went to -Mandy, who led practically all the way. Panther could not fulfil his contract so well as his Btablemate Historic in tho Cup, and was a moderate second ridden out. The Lawn Handicap was perhaps the most interesting race of the day. It was full of incident. „' x,,-, The veteran starter, Mr. C. O'Connor, returned to his -position at the barrier, his first appearance after his recent illness. JUVENILE HANDICAP. Autopay was backed down to pronounced odds on. Miss Hastings and Sunstead were hopelessly left- and Open Cheque began best from Autopay, Kalmuk, and Arajcan. Open Cheque and Autopay drew well ahead racing for the turn, with Arajcan and Benigu heading the rest. Autopay ran wide and Open Cheque always held the advantage to beat Autopay by nearly a length. Arajean was five lengths back third, with Bemgn fourth, and Kalmuk and Lady Ronald heading the rest. „.„,■,,,,, Open Cheque broke H. Telford s long Tun of ill-luck and stayed on too well for Autopay, who was not well ridden. Nothing else had a chance with this pair, but Arajean might have done belter with an even jump out. NOVICE STAKES. Cluny was solidly supported for some reason, with Spearful and Simkissed best backed of the others. Agrestic began very smartly from Maidstone and Sunkissed. Maidstone and,. Sunkissed drew clear racing round the top from Lady Gem, Agrestic, and Spearful, with the rest strung out. Suukissed had Maidstone beaten at the turn, with Spearful and Lady Gen closing up. Sunkissed held her advantage and staved oft' Spear-; ful by a little over a length. Lady Gen was "three lengths away third, with Agrestic fourth and Maidstone and Hystride leading the next bunch. Sunkissed showed plenty 'of speed early, and this stood to her, for Spearful was unable to bridge the gap. He gave the leader a big start from the turn. Lady Gen was sticking on well, and Agrestic ran a fair race. Maidstone showed some pace. Cluny was not sighted. Sunkissed is also trained by H. Telford, of Trentham. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Tunbridge was an odds-on • favourite, with Elicit the only other backed. Fiery Comet led out of the straight from Rouex and Elicit, with the other three in lino about a length away. Rouex headed off ' Fiery Comet at the turn, with Elicit, Tunbridge, and Essential handy. Elicit struck trouble and lost ground. Tunbridge gradually overhauled Rouex. and in a good finish Tunbridge beat Rouex by a neck, with Essential a head away third. Elicit was finishing fast a neck back, fourth. Fiery Comet was right up next. Tunbridge finished very well and even though Elicit was unlucky it is doubtful if he would have beaten Tunbridge. Roues ran his best race for a long time. Both Essential and Fiery Comet ran decent races. LAWN HANDICAP. Royal Opera and Austerity were the favourites in a good betting race. Mothplane was left altogether, and Tourist and General Gas began slowly. Air Force led out from Fallow, with Austerity, Waterspear, and Easterly next. Easterly and Air Force showed the way round passing the half-mile to Fallow, Austerity, Waterspear, and Royal Opera. Austerity came up on the rails racing down the straight, while General Gas put in a good run. ' Austerity finished on to win by a length, while General Gas beat Air Force by half a length for second. Waterspear was fourth; and Tourist, Eoyal Opera, and Fallow next. Austerity received a lucky run m the straight and possibly was fortunate to win. General Gas came from a long way back to run second, and should have won. Air Force tried to win all the way, but faded over the last furlong. Waterspear ran a fair race and can be expected to improve, while Royal Opera ran into a lot o£ trouble. Tourist did well considering lie began slowly. Easterly showed pace for five furlongs. MASTERTON CUP. Historic was backed to odds-on. Jameses led out of the straight from S&lomite, Grecian, and Historic. Rameses flowed the way down the back to DoloSiite, Full Mark, Stanchion, Grecian, Historic, and Billion. Historic received a check going up to the half-mile post. Full Mark joined Rameses racing round to the turn, then coming Stanchion, Dolomite, Grecian, Billion, and Historic. Rameses, Full Mark, Stanchion, aud Grecian were the first into the straight, but Historic soon forced his way through and in reality won easily if only by half a length from Stanchion, who beat Grecian by half a length.. Rameses was right up, fourth, then coining Full Mark, . Dolomite, and Billion. Historic played with this field at the finish once be took the lead. .. Stanchion finished on well, and was most unlucky in the running. Grecian ran a creditable race. Rameses was always prominent and was not disgraced. Pull Mark was sot a fairly severe task ajid there was no disgrace in his defeat. Dolomite and Billion were not going like winners at any stage. FLYING HANDICAP. Panther wound tip a £10 better favourite than Mandy in a very even betting race. Panther actually showed out first, but Mandy soon ran to the front and was joined by Melissa going to the half mile, then coming Dobbin and Panther, with Goblin Market and Malayan at the tail of the field. Mandy shook off Melissa after turning for home, where Panther had a good opening on the rails. Mandy stalled off the hard-ridden Panther and beat him by a. length, with Melissa a length and a half back third. Malayan was right up fourth and Goblin Market and Dobbin together. Mandy signalised her entry into open company by winning in great style. Panther in the small field with plenty of room ran a much boiler race, and he put in good work. At the same time he and B. IT. Morris do not appear to be a happy combination, which is unusual, for most horses go well for the Marlon horseman.

I Melissa ran a really good race and Malaylan finished on. Goblin Market looked a picture, but both he and Dobbin ran badly. GRANDSTAND HANDICAP. 1 Emotion, Statuary, and Werata were the favourites. Money Mint, Werata, Dainty Ways, and Kilstar showed out first irom a good st<yt. Money Mint .'-cd Daint,' Ways and .^motion round the top with Desert Lad and Werata moving up and Kilstar going back. Money Mint lea Emotion and Dainty Ways into the straight with Werata and Desert Lad coming up. Dainty Ways set out after .Money Mint in the last furlong, just getting up to'win in a hard finish by halt a head. Werata was a length and a half away third, with Emotion fourth and Desert Lad, Masher, and Kiriana in line next. .. Dainty Ways stayed on particularly 'well and did not flinch in a punishing finish. Money Mint showed again an example ot his pace and Werata was staying on. Emotion, who was badly served at the barrier, wa's left without a finishing riuv Desert Lad and Masher ran well enough to suggest a win for them soon. LANSDOWNE HANDICAP. Potoaform was at a good price in a five horse field. He jumped out first and with Portray led the other three to the turn. Potoaform going easily in front won by a length .and a half from Portray, who beat Winloch by a length. Baskier and Acreline were about a length away. Potoaform was easily superior. Both Portray and Baskier will be improved by the race. Winloch finished well. Results: — Juvenilo Handicap, of 139 soys; for two-vcar-olds; live furlongs and HO yards.—2 Open Cheque 7.T (T.
