CYCLING DISPUTE

CONFERENCE PROPOSALS

DELEGATION FOB AUCKLAND

.■Consideration was given at last evening's meeting of tho New Zealand Amateur Athletic Council to the following three recommendations made at the Cycle Conference in Wanganui last month: —(1) That the name of the N.Z.A.A.A. be changed to N.Z.A.A. and Cycling Association. (2) That a eyeing sub-committee of the N.Z.A.A.A. Be' formed and- one member for the same be appointed by each centre, the sub-committee to consist of the members so appointed with the addition, of $ije chairman of the New -Zealand Council. (3) That each centre form a Cycling sub-committee1 similar to those operating in Canterbury and Wellington. ..... . ' Before any discussion took place, Mr. ti. A, Tracy (lion, secretary) read a report-of the proceedings at tho cycle conference. . ~....■... eTKb-chairman (Mr. R. W. : M'Villy) said it was rather interesting to find that""Mr:- Stewart, of. Auckland, had modified :,-his> views somewhat. "What is the 'object of proposing the change of name and what' is going to bo tho effect of it?" asked Mr. M'Villy.. j Mr.' Tracy: "The delegates at the conference considered that if the word 'cycling' .was added, it would represent first to, the cyclists, and then to the public that it is a cycling as well as an athletic association*"'■ ; The.chairman said that tho point he raised* was whether if the word was added it would effect the association's position with"' regard to other bodies with which it was affiliated already. • Mr. Tracy: ,"I take it that we should have to write to the International Federation." \ Mr. M'Villy: "If the adoption of tho change of title is going to affect our relationship with: the International Federation, then'it is a different matter." Mr. E. G. Guy said he did-not think it/would alter .the association's position; i'The. Irish, Association controlled both cycling and athletics. Mr. M'Villy said that if the matter could be amicably settled so much the better. Thb adoption of the word 'cycling' was held to be a way out of the dispute that had arisen. MATTER OF URGENCY. Mr. H. Austad said the matter was one of urgency. He thought that a letter should be sent "to tho International Federation immediately so as to expedite finality. Mr. Gr. S. Bright considered that the council would- :Se: justified in altering the name at once..than taking the risk of asking the federation" first. Any steps taken to-;hold.;-up -the suggestion made at the "conference-■.: would be dangerous. . . . Mr. Guy asked''the chairman what objection he thought would be raised by the International § Federation, "I am just wondering," said Mr. M'Villy, "whether the federation takes cognisance of cycling and whether anyother association is in the same position as that in which we would be placed. I don't anticipate any difficulty will be raised, but still it_ is a matter we must take into consideration." It was decided to seek the advice of the International Federation as suggested and to advise the centres that Mr. Austad had given notice to move the adoption of the conference recommendations at the next meeting of the council, with the alteration to tho third nthat the appointment of a sub-cor-

mittee by a centre need not- bo compulsory. ' i EVENTS IN AUCKL/i3 ID. The council then went intSo committee to discuss recent events in Auckland in connection with Sue vexed question of the control of cycling in tho Dominion and also sovornl letters and' other communications .received on the subject. Subsequently the chairman announced that Messrs. Guy ,'A.ustad, and Tracy had- been -appointed to confer with tho Manukau Club a.s.d others interested in cycling, at Auckland m the immediate future wil;h a view to. straightening out tho disrjutc.
