RED CROSS WORK

UNEMPLOYMENT EELIEP

Tho Ituv. R. Inglis presided at the weekly meeting, of the Red Cross Unemployment Relief Committee on Tuesday. Satisfaction, was expressed by members present at the statement made by the Prime Minister that the unemployment problem would be practically an , unknown quantity in five weeks.

Several cases had been referred by members of Parliament to the. committee to deal with since the last meeting. For sonic of these the committee had been able to find light work of a temporary nature, in addition to giving clothing where needed, and .board and lodgings in cases of urgency. A deserving case of a man aged 63, discharged from tho Hospital after a' serious operation, had come before the committee. He was in need of light diet, coal, and underclothing. The man had lost hid son on Gallipoli. Orders were given, and the needs of the caso were immediately met. A letter was also given to him to present to ; the Social Welfare Committee. '>■:•'•

Another case of a- man with a wife and seven children had been dealt with. Tho man had served in the South African War, He was behind in his rent and gas bill. By arrangement with the South African Veterans' Association, it was resolved that that body and the society should defray tho cost of the lighting account, overdue to the extent of over &i, and tho Gas Company, on hearing the facts of the case, reinstated the discount. Tho wife and children wore also in need of clothes, and tho man was requested to.see the superintendent of the Ladies' Kcd Cross Auxiliary.

A married man, who was unemployed, aiid had. experienced a great deal of sickness with his wife and family, was in need of boots and clothes for his little boy. Orders for these were given and goods obtained, the warehouse in each case extending spoeial terms. He was seeking a position as storeman. During the severe -weather several cases presented' themselves for temporary relief in tho form of a night's lodgings, and these requests had been complied with. Through tho kindness of the "Wellington Girls' College Junior Rod Cross Circle, 12 dozeni eggs had been sent in, and had been, distributed among cases needing light diet. Vacancies arc sought for labourers, cook and baker, bookkeeper and storeman, steward, body ftnishcr, and lorry driver, and tho committee would be glad to hear from anyono seeking such services.
