AUCKLAND'S MEMORIAL

A FURTHER APPEAL

A public appeal is being made by the Citizens' Committee of the Auckland War Memorial Museum with the object of raising a further £4839 for completion of the scheme now in hand to erect a cenotaph in a special court of honour in front of the building, a-d to carry out beautifying work on the site (states the 'New Zealand Herald"). Donations totalling 56660 15s from 49 business houses and private benefactors have already been received by the committee,, and it is hoped to bring this up to S 11,500 by means of further gifts. The opening date of the museum has been fixed definitely for Thursday, 2Sth November. The ceremony will be performed by the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, and the cenotaph will be consecrated on the same afternoon. Mr. A. S. Bankart, chairman of the Citizens' Committee, stated on Tuesday that the committee had already spent over g,230,u00 in the completion of the museum building. In addition, through assistance given by the City Council, roadways serving as approaches to the museum had been made and a wide area of ground had been levelled. "I want to emphasise the fact that the cenotaph was at no time a portion of the museum." Mr. Bankart said. "However, the committee considered that the erection of a cenotaph would be a very suitable adjunct and a very fitting memorial.''
