DUTIES WELL DONE

FAREWELL TO MR. D. A. STRACHAN A very pleasant function took place in the Education Board Office this morning, when the inspectors of the district with their wives and the board staff assembled to say farewell to Mrs. Strachan and Mr. D. A. Strachan, M.A., who this week transferred the duties of sentior inspector to the hands of Dr. M'lhvraith. Inspector Burns, the senior of the inspectors, presented Mrs. Strachan with several pieces of choice Ainsley china, and Mr. Strachau with a walking stick. Inspector Burns remarked that Mr. Strachan had well sustained the honour of the great lino of inspectors whose services it had been the fortune of the Wellington district to enjoy, namely, Messrs. Robert Lee, T. R. Fleming, F. H. Bakewell, and W. W. Bird. Mr. [ Strachan had been most considerate to l his colleagues, and wise and faithful in I the discharge of his duties. His erudition and his powers of mind were such as would have graced an eveu higher position. Chief-Inspector Bird, whom ' Mr. Strachau had succeeded as senior inspector, and who had known him from his student days, congratulated Mr. Strachan on the completion of a most honourable career, and commented on his sterling qualities as a scholar, educationist, and gentleman. His official duties hail been most ably discharged, and he had a. knowledge, of educational policy and problems which few could surpass.

The secretary of the board (Air. G. -L. Stewart) acknowledged the spirit of helpfulness .-md friendliness which had constantly marked Mr. Strachan's relations with the board and its staff, and expressed on behalf of the staff their thanks and good wishes. He took the opportunity of welcoming Dr' and Mrs M'llwraith to tho district, and assured them of the hearty co-operation of the staff. -Mr. Slraehan, in-returning thanks, remarked on the very friendly relations which had been established between himself, the inspectors, the board, and tho staff. He particularly appreciated the confidence the board had reposed in him in inviting him to be present at all its meetings, lie was quite sure this cordial co-operation conferred much benefit on education here. Then, he had had a most loyal staff of inspectors, who had done more than their share of the work. Dr. MM I wraith thanked the inspectors and the staff for the friendly welcome extended to his wife and himself. The proceedings throughout were marked by cordiality, and terminated wiih musical honours for the coming and departing guests—the retiring ami 'he incoming inspector and their wives.
