PORIRUA CROSSING
ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL
OBJECTION TO BRIDGE
The proposed overhead raihvay'bridgc at Porirua is objected to by many of the residents and business people of the locality on the grounds that its erection would be waste of money seeing that a slight alteration in the existing road would make the crossing safer.
j Recently Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., wrote to the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. E. A. Eausom) to this effect, and lan answer has been received that tho Minister will inspect the locality for himself as soon as possible. Mr. "Field in his letter pointed out that if the bridge was erected Porirua business premises would be on a blind road and trade would suffer according)}-. The difiiculty of obstruction at the crossing could bo avoided by a slight alteration iv the road. "A strong point, too," concluded Mr. Field's letter, "is that | the adoption of my suggestion would get [ rid of a number of heavy claims for [ compensation, for, if I am correctly advised, the only private' land which would require to be taken would be two corners of vacant low-lying damp land, without any severance. It is true that there would be a good deal of filling required, but this could be obtained from nearby corners of the main road, just to the north, and the removal of these corners would very materially improve j the road by shortening and straightening it and remove the danger which the many bad corners involve." In a letter to the Makara County Council, which was read at a meeting of the council yesterday, Mr. Field stated that he would advise tho council when the Minister intimated to him the date of his proposed visit.
