HENLEY-ON-YARRA
Showers during tho morning and a biting wind in the afternoon considerably marred the 22nd annual Henley-on-Yarra Eegatta, held on the Upper Ynrra (states the "Sun"). Thousands lined the river banks, however, and the true carnival spirit prevailed. Streamers, bunting, gay walking sticks, and favours brought colour and sparkle to ;i scene of life and animation. Houseboats and gaily decorated canoes thronged the course. There were 400 competitors in. tho 45 events, 31 clubs being represented. This is a new llciiley record for entries. The Grand Challenge between Moslnan and Mercantile was eagerly looked forward to, mainly because it would give an indication of the comparative merits of the cream of senior men in Victoria and New South Wales, as this has an important bearing on the next interstate contest. There was a fair amount of wind against the crews, which would be in favour of the heavy Mosman crew. Mosman led into the straight with a good three-quarter length's lead. Mercantile maintained their form very well, and pressed the holders of the cup to their top speed. Approaching tho houseboats Mercantile fought hard to reduce their deficit, but Mosman maintained their lead. Both crews went through the rough water very well, but Mosman proved thoir superiority by winning by a good length and a quarter. Both crews gave a fine exhibition of oarsmanship, but on to-day's rowing New South Wales would appear to be able to produce a better interstate crew than Victoria. The splendid physique of Mosman was freely commented on, and was 'undoubtedly an important factor in their success.
