LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

MEETINGS OF BRANCHES The annual meeting of the Lyall Bay branch' of the League of Mothers was held in the Maranui Methodist Church Hall. The president, Mrs. R. W. B. Young, was in the chair, and there was an excellent attendance of members. The report on the .year's work was read by the secretary (Mrs. J. C. Ridj doll), and was considered very satisfactory. All the retiring officers wevo re-elected unanimously for the ensuing year. Everyone present was delighted i.o welcome Mrs. T. Nic.olson—the founder of the Lyall Bay branch—who was pleased at the progress made and the ] enthusiasm slioavii by members. On tho conclusion of the business, the remainder of the afternoon was given up to sociability, and' a short programme was contributed by Mrs. Geo. Castle (elocutionary items) and Mcsdamos P. Jackson and Keith M'Allum (duets and individual solos). Mrs. Robertson supplied n novel competition, tho prize for which (donated by the president) was won by Mrs. P. Staple. Afternoon tea was served by the committee, and the singing of the National Anthem brought-a most enjoyable afternoon to a close. A particularly pleasant afternoon was spent by the Kelburn branch of the League of Mothers at its annual meeting. The report showed an active and progressive year with a largo increase of members, and keen interest in tho work of the branch. Votes of thanks were passed to the speakers, whose addresses had proved most edifying; also to tl^oso who contributed musical and elocutionary items during the year, and to tho Committee of Management of the Presbyterian Church for tho free use of their convenient and commodious hall. New officers for the year were elected as follow:—President, Mrs. F. Maclean (re-elected); vice-president, Mrs. Inglis (re-elected); lion, secretary, Mrs. B. Dallard (re-elected); lion, treasurer, Mrs. Buddie; committee, Mesdames Holdsworth, Jolly, Taylor, Nieolson, I_.cm._n, Davidson, and Thompson (re-elected), MacAllum, Syman, Kissel, Briggs, and Webb. Miss Hilda Chudley sang two songs, "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" (Quilter) and "Tho Star," which were greatly enjoyed. A competition was held during afternoon tea, and won by Mrs. Morris Jones. Some very acceptable recipes and valuable hints pertaining to the household were ' exchanged among tho members. The meeting subsequently adjourned till tho New Year. The final meeting of the Lower Hutt branch of tho League of Mothers was of a bright and cheerful nature. There was a very good attendance of members in spite of an exciting week. After the usual business had been transacted discussion groups were formed,.each group choosing its captain. The suggestions of the groups were then given to the meeting by the captains and then handed on to the incoming committee. After afternoon tea had been served, during which Miss Findlay played incidental music, the little members of the creche were brought in to the meeting, and a Christmas atmosphere was introduced by tho singing of carols. Mrs. Mitchell followed with an appropriate song, "The Gift,'? and the bairns "vcro all gathered around Mrs. Riley, of vie Kindergarten, who told them Xmas legends, fascinating alike to both the young and their mothers, Tho league ''birthday cake," with its. two candles, was then cut for the children, and tho National Anthem closed the successful session of 1928. During the afternoon tokens of appreciation were handed to various officers of the association, including Mrs, _?raser, the energetic treasurer, whoso removal from the district necessitates her resignation. It was announced that the first church service will be held on Sunday evening, 2nd December, in Methodist- Church, tho committee feeling that this would be the most fitting close to the year's activities. The Wadestown branch of the League of Mothers held its final meeting for the year recently, when there was a good attendance of members. The president gave a resume of the year's work, and thanked the committee and members for their hearty co-operation. The secretary, in her report, mentioned that the number on the roll had been doubled during the season, which had been a most_ successful one from every point of view. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. A. R. Stone; secretary, Mrs. Colin Gray; assistant secretary, Mrs. S. D. Pope; committee, Mesdamcs Hislop, Turner, Simpson, Thompson, Harrison, Rhodes, Grainger, Fern, Stafford, Paviour-Smith, M'Donald, Hutchinson, Peebles, Biggins, G. Withers, Healy, and Webster. A varied programme was given by members, and tea concluded tho meeting.
