The term "commonwealth" is generally regarded as synonymous, with "commonweal"—a Government in'which the public has a direct voice. It was used in a special-sense to denote the period in English ' history between the closo of Charles I.'s reign in 1649.and the Restoration of the Monarchy in. 1660. The federation of the Australian colonies in 1000 took the title "Commonw.ealth of Australia."
