CYCLE ROAD RACING
LOCAL SEASON OPENED The number of amateur cyclists taking part;m'this season's road-racing in Wellington is expected to be considerably above that recorded last year. Over thirty riders participated in the season's opening event, which started at the Petone Rowing Club's sheds on Saturday afternoon.* Before the riders'were dispatched the Mayor of Petone' (Mr. M'Kenzie) declared the season open. ' The route for the competitors was from Petorie ■to the Taita Gorge and, back,-a distance of about 15 miles. An exciting finish was provided by six of the competitors who were well bundled for the final sprint, the placings being: P. Sutherland (smin), 1; L. ;j. Manning (4%min), 2; W. Hall (4%min), 3. Fastest time was registered by M. Gane (scr) 42min 7sec, with H. J. Morris (scr) only a second slower. Third fastest time was registered by the ex-Aucklander, W. T. Bray. The officials were: Starter, Mr. C. Thompson; judges, Messrs...C- Telfar, J. T. Innes, and J. Ward; timekeepers, Messrs. C. Thompson and W.-Ballantyne; road officials, Messrs. P. H. Robinson, A. Vandersoot, J. E. Jaggo, and 11. 11. Moss; Imndicapper, Mr. H. H. Moss; secretary, Mr. H. D. London. ,
