CONFLICT IN BERLIN

EVE OF GENERAL ELECTION Unifad Service. BERLIN, 19th May. Oiie was killed and many people were injured as the result of a fight between National Socialists and Fascists, wherein stones, sticks, and beer mugs were the weapons. Tho police were temporarily powerless to restore order. It is regarded as strange that the disturbance should have occurred on the eve of the poll, after a campaign that has been unprecedentedly quiet. Some experts opine that only 50 per cent, of the voters will vote to-day There are thirty-one parties and 4500 candidates, of whom 400 are women. Nobody expects a transference of votes sufficient to materially alter tho political situation. It is certain no.party will have a majority; more coalitions are inevitable in any case. A continuance of the Stresemann policy is regarded as assured. There is no whisper of Kaiserism. A novel experiment will be carried out in Berlin, where distinctive voting papers will be issued to men and women, -enabling it to be seen in what proportions the sexes vote.
