The Northerners, fighting with their backs to the wall, were'defeated in their initial engagement with the combined forces of the Southern Allies, following a drive launched at Wangtu, yesterday. The three armies assaulting the Northern defences—namely, the Nationalists, commanded by Chfang Kai-Shek; the Kuominchun, commanded by Feng YuHsiang, the so-called Christian general; and the Shansiites, commanded by I\jl Shi-Hsan, Governor of Shansl province —attacked from three sides, compelling the Northerners to shorten their lines and fall* back twenty miles nearer Pekin. '
