OLD BOYS v. BERHAMPORE.

Played before a small attendance o£ spectators; on the Petone Oval, the game between Old Boys and Berhampore failed to come up to expectations. Till the last few minutes thS play was of a very scraggy - nature,' ■with both sides playing as mdi.- . vidnals rather than teams. The standard of play then improved, and, Old Boys, finishing better than their opponents, substantially increased the slight lead they hnd established earlier in the game. The teams were:— - Old, Boys.—Malcolm, Lamason, Grenfell, 'i'l'Wylie> M'Dougall, Fitzmaurice, T)u Chatcaui Jones, Claridge, Keynolds, Emerson, Pr'dston, M'Pherson, Hum, and Meadows. Berhampore.—Hurley, Mason, Lang, Cooke, Love, Pickering, Taylor, ■Glennie, Mollier, M'Donald, .Goodall, Mouatt, Cameron, Deere, and Dixon. Berhnmpore won the toss and played •with the sun at their backs for the first spell. .An interchange of kicks ended with the ball going out at half-way. The Old' Boys' backs then swung into action, but Grenfell dropped' his pass,. and the movement broke up. Berhampore were ' mostly on the defensive, and were penalised in front of the posts: but Malcolm missed the kick. The White forwards ■ then broke away from a scrum, and a short punt had Berhampore in difficulties. 1 Then Lamason snapped up the ball and cut clean through the defence to score under the posts. Malcolm converted. Old Boys 5, Berhamporo 0. The Old Boys' inside backs w<re continually attempting to dummy their way past the Blues, but ■were generally well sinotliero.-l. mid the result was a very drab exhibition. A variation was introduced when Love fooled several of the Whites' and was stopped within a few yards of the line. This was followed by one of the rare combined movements . instituted by ■ Berhampore. Love and Lang were prominent, but the former was tackled on the line. From the resultant scramble Cameron secured

and got over. Love missed the kick. Old Boys 5, Berhampt ..i 3. » The play contii:ujd uneven when the second half commriced. Cameron dribbled over the line, but failed to gather in the leather. Berhampore had rather the better of matters, and on one occasion three of the Blues had no one between them and tho line, but threw away a golden opportunity by offside play. Emerson broke clean away from a serum, and after a strong dash passed to Reynolds, and from him the ball went to M'Donald to Lamason to Grenfell, who ran round and scored under the posts. Malcolm converted. Old Boys 10, Berhampore'3. The Berhampore backs got on to the Whites too quickly, and from a penalty Malcolm goaled. Old Boys 13, Berhampore 3. The handling of both sides had now improved, and some better team work was seen. Right on time Dv Chateau got away down the line and passed to Lamason, who had an open field and' scored in a good position. Malcolm converted, and the game ended with the scores: Old Boys 18, Berhampore 3. Mr. G. Rathbon refereed.
