(From Our Own Correspondent.) : NELSON, sth May. Yesterday the colleges closed down for term holidays, and outgoing boats and mail cars were crowded with boys and '. girls returning to their homes. The primary schools in the Nelson district also closed down for two weeks midwinter vacation. . There has been no frost so far near the town and the weather remains fairly warm, with the result that there is still considerable growth in the grass. In fact, the hillsides round the city and Tahuna present the same appearance that one looks for after the first few weeks oi spring. This timely growth will be of*nestimable value to farmers during the winter months. Yesterday at the Wakefield bowling green the final of the senior champion o£ champions of the Nelson Bowling Centre was played between Ching, of Wakefield, and Bartlett, of Nelson. Ching won by 20. points to 11, Bartlett retiring after the 19th head. The Anchor Company proposes to lay up the Nikau and Kaitoa, as the shipping of apples will shortly be slackening off. These vessels will be overhauled and given their annual Government inspection, after which the Ngaio and Arahura in succession will be laid up for the same purpose. The Titoki is now being overhauled and some slight damage done to her upper gear, caused by bumping the Onakaka Wharf recently, is being repaired. Mr. F. W. Greenslade (chairman) and Mr. J. T. Radford (secretary) of the Tahunanui Town Board, waited on the Waimea County Council on Thursday to ask for a contribution towards the initial cost incidental to the electric lighting scheme from the Motueka River. The council decided to contribute one-half of the cost up to but not exceeding £100. A bumper house greeted the Blenheim amateurs last night, when "The Naughty Wife" was presented. Those taking the leading parts were: Miss P. Bennett (Eloise Farrington), Mr. F. C. Carver (a man servant), Mr. E. I. Bi-ammoll (Hillary Farrington), Tilr. F. F. Reid <Darrel M'Knight), Mrs. lirol Reid (Annette), Mrs. F. F. Reid (Norn Fail), Mr. S. Marshall (chauffeur), Mr. A. E. L. Scantlebury (Bishop Kennelly). These performers are to be highly complimented on their finished interpretation of the' play. A well-known citizen, who wishes to remain anonymous, has offered to contribute £100 towards the cost of filling-in and planting the strips of mud flat facing Halifax street, on the opposite side of Anzac Park, conditional on nine others giving a like sum or eighteen giving £50. The suggested improvement is one greatly to be desired. Dr. David Miller, who succeeds Dr. Tilyard as chief entomologist at the Cawthron Institute, has arrived in Nelson. Mr. A. F. D. East, headmaster of the Auckland Point School, left for Wellington last night. Captain and Mrs. M.M. Moncrieff left last night for Wellington.
