THE NEW POOR
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Even through the thick smoke screen raised by contending political" factions to obscure real issues, one thing looms large. It is this —the standard of living of the average salaried and professional person is slowly but surely sinking. This, after all, is not surprising, for though numerous these new poor arc unorganised, and are, for the most part, inarticulate. No political party takes them specially under its wing. The Labour Party is more solicitous about the wage-earners—''wage-slaves" as they felicitously call, themselves. Therefore, the Reform Party has made more than one attack on the large but helpless class, consisting of salaried people. It paid, of course, and was done with the very best of intentions. "They were all honourable men, whose daggers have stabbed Caesar." All the same, it was very hard on Caesar. — 1 am, etc., NEMO, Wellington, sth May.
