DE LUXE THEATRE.
In "Tho Circus," Charlie Chaplin appears In a masterpiece at tho Do Luxe -Theatre. Yet with the humour there is a delicate blending of pathos and love interest. Charlie, as a down and out tramp, is banging round the outskirts of a circus. He is offered a job as a funny man, but In trying to bo funny Intentionally ho fails miserably and is given tho sack. A timely strike amongst the hands gives him a further chance, and ho Is engaged as a proof the show because he' is natural. In file meantime tho course of true love does not run any too smoothly, but Charlie finds out his truo value to the circus, gallantly takes tho part of an absenteo tight-rope walker, his rival, and triumphs. The circus naturally gives the famous comedian numerous opportunities to display his art, and ho is not slow to take fliem. Charlie Chaplin ii.advcrtenlly shut up in tha lion's cage is an episode worlh going a long way (o see, but tin gem of his foolery is perhaps when lie gels mixed up wilh the magician's apparatus, liberating doves, guinea. Pigs, and all kinds of live stock. The supports include an interesting topical Him and some line scenic, views of Sicily and Spain. The- playing or tho orchestra Is a Icalure of Ilic programme. During the Charlie Chaplin season I herb will be a matinee each day at 2.U0 p.m. in addition to tho evening screening. Commencing next Friday at Hie Do Luxe Theatre will be screened one of (lie most sensational pictures ever filmed, entitled "Mesh and tho Devil." It was taken from the novel, "The Undying Past," by Herman Sudermann, and features a great cast, comprising John ■Gilbert, Greta Garbo, Lars Hanson, Barbara Kent and George Fawcett. The story is based on the tale of the charmer, who ensnared tho love of her husband's best friend. Tho picture fs gorgeously staged. Old castles on the Klin™ were actually reproduced, and many remarkable feats In the screen stagecraft were carried out to make the picture so typically, European that ono would Imagine it filmed there. It is colourful, dramatic, and gripping. The supportIng programme will bo of a high standard, and a music programme of great beauty will be Tendered by the Orchestra Do Luxe and Mr. Aarons at the Wtirlitzer will bo heard in fresh numbers.
