LETTER BOXES ROBBED
OFFENCES IN AUCKLAND (Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND This Day.* Post Oftico letter boxes in tlio suburbs have been broken open during the past ten days and mail removed. As the disappearance of cheques and sums of money has been traced to this cause, the Postal authorities issuo a warning to tho public that documents or articles of valuable uaturo should bo handed in at the nearest Post Office for registration. The first theft occurred at the corner of ltemucra road and Hidings road on tho night of 10th April. Other cases that have sinco been reported indicate that the work is that of a person wilh a motor-cycle or car, as the districts of Ucnmera, Epsom, Famuli, anil Mount Albert have been visited in turn. Locks have been broken by force, showing that a heavy instrument has been used, and last evening in Iho Mount Albert area the correspondence was removed from four boxes. j The Assistant Postmaster said yesterday that an effort was being 'made to run the offender to earth, and in this Iho public could assist. Anyone observed at a box for an unusually long time should give rise to suspicion. A second or two was sufficient to post a letter, and at night the time of clearance could quickly be ascertained by striking a match. In all cases interference had been after the 3 o'clock to 4 o'clock clearances in the afternoon by suburban messengers and the before the arrival of a motor-van up to 1 a.m. Several boxes had been found open at 11.40 p.m. The Mount Albert discoveries were made about 1 a.m.- yesterday.
