"FIT FOR LIGHT WORK ONLY"
Quite a considerable proportion of the callers at the Mayor's office during the last week or so have been —and continue to be—men, some married, some single, who state, and who also obviously are truthful in their statements, that they are unable to undertake anything but light work, and are unable to find such employment. To know how best to help thoso callers, remarked Mr. Norwood to a "Post" reporter to-day, was difficult; the council would very" readily place every one o£ the them if it was able to do so, but plainly it could not, for very few of the civic activities called for men who could not undertake heavy work. It had to be remembered, also, that Corporation employees also fell upon unhappy times now and then, accidents which incapacitated, serious illnesses, and the council >vas in duty bound to see that those men did not go without employment. Mr. Norwood added that he would be pleased if citizens, who were able to offer positions, would communicate with him: the men were genuine, they would work if they could find work.
