NELSON, 3rd October. While there has been some diversity of opinion on the merits of the proposed Fruit Control • Bill, it is interesting to note that the fruitgrowers of the Redwoods Valley area, at a meeting on Monday night, at which a long discussion on the Bill was held, ultimately resolved unanimously to support the Bill.

A large deputation, representing citizens, the Automobile Association, taxi drivers, and wharf owners, waited on the Waimea County Council on Thursday asking for repairs to be effected to the Maitai Valley road, to which the interests represented would contribute on a £1 for £1 basis. Messrs. F. O. Hamilton, H. Johnston, and W. Bout were the speakers for the deputation. . On a suggestion being made by Councillor Hewetson that the City Council should contribute, Mr. Hamilton said he had seen the Town Clerk on the matter, who' stated that the council had no authority to spend money outside the- city boundary. Mr. Hamiltpn also stated that), the City Council had a valuable reserve in the valley. It was resolved that the chairman, Councillor Corder, and the engineer should inspect the road in company with representatives of the deputation, and that the City Council be approached ou the matter.

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Philosophical Society was held on Wednesday .evening, ProfeasQß Easterfield presiding. Captain M. >M. Moncrief gave a paper on "Waves and Their Propagation,' . giving an account of the different kinds: of waves in water, air, and ether. An illustrated Lecturettet -was given by Mr, W. 0. Davies, of the Cawthron Institute, entitled "A Long Forgotten Nelson Derelict." This referred to a portion of a millstone quarried in France, and imported into New Zealand in the early days by Europeans. He exhibited the pieces which 50 or 60 y v ears ago were part of one of the millstones used in Taranakij and later came to the Nelson district, the intention being to use them to grind cement. Mr. -Davies gave a very interesting description of the origin and formation of these stones., The secretary com-^ municated a paper by Mr. D. D. Mil-; ligan on the wetas of New Zealand. AH the contributors received appreciative votes of thanks.

The next meeting of the society will be the annual meeting, and to mark tho close of the session there wiil be a con-, versazione at the Cawthron Institute. The Nelson Rugby Union's social was held on. Thursday evening at the- Oddfellows' Hall. There was a large gathering of footballers and supporters. Mr. K. Boon, president of the Nelsori Rugby Union was in the ohair, and the Mayor of Nelson was also present. The captains of the winning teams were called upon in turn to receive the various trophies won. After this had been dono the chairman . said Mr. Sherlock had presented miniature golden foothalls for the members of the Seddon Shield team. There was hearty applause as the presentations were made, and Mr. Sherlock was loudly cheered for his gifts, which came as a complete surprise to the recipients. The Mayor, in a short speech, congratulated the union on the way it managed its affairs, saying that football had made great strides since the war, . ■
