THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT
Members of the House of Representatives were in a .mood to do plenty of work yesterday, after the amenities of the previous evening, but they were not called upon to legislate by process of exhaustion. Intimation was received from the Legislative Council that it persisted in its amendments to, the; Mortgages Final Extension Bill, and managers were appointed to confer with representatives of the Upper House to see whether or not a settlement can be reached. TheLand and Income Tax Amendment' Bill, which provides principally for increasing the exemption from land tax, on account of mortgages, was put-through its final stages, although the mortgage provision was subjected to a good deal of hostile criticism. The Education Reserves Amendment Bill, which the Minister in charge (the Hon.C. J_ Parr) explained was largely a machinery measure to rectify, defects in the present law, was passed, also the Seddon Family. .Burial Ground Bill, and Mr. Massey explained the effect of the principal clauses in the Stamp Duties Amendment Bill, which, by the" interest evinced-by-some-mem-bers, appears to be like that peace which passeth aIL understanding.. This Bill has yet to be dealt with.in Committee, where its mysteries will- no;doubt be further elucidated. The -Bouse"rase 'at 11.18 p.m., until 7,30 p.mZon- Monday.
