AUSTRALIA IN THE WAR

* WRITING THE HISTORY.

The scheme for the publication of the history of Australia in the war has been approved by the Federal Cabinet. It is proposed to publish volumes dealing with the operations in Gallipoli, France, Rabaul, nand Palestine. The exploits of the Royal Australian Navy, and of the Australian Flying Corps, and the war effort within Australia will be described in separate volumes. In addition, the Government will assist each of the great civil professions 1o produce a record of their war work, and will also encourage the writing by units of theAJ.F. of small regimental histories. The scheme has been planned so that it may pay for itself.

Tho national histories will comprise:— Gallipoli and Prance, to be written by Mr. C .E. W. Bean, national historian; Palestine, by Mr. H. S. Gullett, official correspondent with the Desert Mounted Troops; Babaul, writer not yet appointed; Australian Flying Corps, by Mr. P. M. Cutlack", official correspondent in Prance; Royal Australian Navy, writer to be appointed by Navy Board; Tho Effort of Australia, by Mr. T. W. Heney (formerly • editor of the Sydney Morning. Herald); and a volume of 600, photographs, to be edited by Messrs. Bean and Gullett. Mr. Charles Barrett, who during the war was editor of the Kiaora Cooee, and of the recently published book, "Australia in Palestine," lias been selected as -organiser and editor of unit histories.
