FRENCH SOLDIERS TO BE CLAD IN STEEL BLUE
The flaming red trousers of the French infantry are doomed. Nothing will re-: main of the 1914 uniform except the cap. "Definitely suppressed," reads tho edict of Minister of War Clemenceau, in regard to the .uniform of many colours. Horizon blue will not be adopted, but a darker shade of blue, which the French call steel blue.
The origin of the red trousers in the French army dates from the ill-fated venture of Maximilian upon the throne of Mexico. Before departing for America, the Emperor ordered a very large quantity of red cloth from French manufacturers, as he desired his army to wear the French trousers which were then in vogue.
