LONDON, 23rd July. Sir Douglas Haig reports : We advanced our line slightly yesterday south of Merris and Meteren, and. south of Hebuterne. We improved our position during the night in the Hamel sector, and successfully raided various districts. There is considerable hostile gas shelling at Villers Bretonneux, and reciprocal artillery action in the Dickebusch sector.
