Minister of Defence stated on tie 9th July that New Zealand had sent away 95,000, and the number raised since the outbreak of war considerably. exceeded 100,000. Tutting the population^ at a million, the pel eentage sent away'is 9.5. Senator Pearce stated on the 13th June that Australia had enlisted 896,487, and 316.53S had embarked. At the end of 1917 the official figures were: Enlisted 387,826, embarked 310,853, discharged, died, or deserted before embarkation 68,937, in training 8136. Taking embarkation figures at the end of June, and with the population of Australia approximately five million, the percentage sent away is approximately 6.3.
