MAGISTRATE'S COURT

At to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court, before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., six first-offending inebriates were dealt with as such. May Gibbons, John Johnson, and John Wilson were each fined 20s, with the alternative of three days in gaol, while -James Condon was fined 10s, or 48 hours in prison. James Landers. 19 years of age, who had pleaded guilty to the theft of a revolver, valued at 30s, came up for sentence. Owing to an unsatisfactory report from the probation officer, his Worship said he could not grant probation. It was hard to know what to do with the lad. There seemed to be nothing else that he could do but sentence him to seven days' imprisonment, with the proviso that he be kept apart from other prisoners.

For disobeying the lawful commands of the chief officer of the Waiwera, Dennis Finn was sentenced to two days' imprisonment. He was ordered to 'be placed on board his vessel before it sailed.

Charles Henry Lord, of the 12th Beinforcements, was adjudged the putative father of an unborn illegitimate child. Lord was ordered to enter into a bond for £50, the order to be suspended so long as adequate provision is made for maintenance.

Joseph Winstanley, who last Aveek pleaded guilty to a charge of theft at Auckland, came up for sentence. His Worship was inclined to alknv probation, but Winstanley was further remanded in order to give the probation oflicer an opportunity to prepare a report. A charge of deserting from the New Zealand forces was withdrawn.

Edward Adams applied to have the arrears (£9) accumulated under a maintenance order remitted. This Avas agreed to.

At Petone, on Saturday, before Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, J.P., Thomas Collins, for being drunk and disorderly, was fined ss.

Messrs. E. Johnston and Co. will hold a sale of household furniture on the premises, No. 33, Duncan-terrace, Kilbirnie, to-morrow, at 1.30 o'clock, by order of the Public Trustee, in the estate of Mrs. M. D. Collier, deceased.
