RUMANIA MASSING TROOPS
WILL THE GERMANS VENTURE ON A SEA FIGHT?
. Details of the second phase of the great German offensive at Verdun are to hand to-day. They show that despite a most prodigal sacrifice of life, the enemy failed to break the French resistance. In Paris%,there is no anxiety regarding the outcome of the battle; in Britain the outlook is considered to be hopeful—"the Allies have never been surer of victory." The light for the village of Douaumont still continues with varying success. Before Belfort, on the border of Alsace, the Germans are now said to be displaying intense activity. In Flanders the British report a minor success.
In the Caucasus, the Russians, despite the inclement weather, are acting with vigour. They have captured at the point of the bayonet Bitlis, which is situated 120 miles south-east of Erzerum, and are now pursuing the Turks. The capture, as shown in the cable messages, is one of considerable importance.
There appeal's to be much truth in the reports that the Turks are tiring of the Avar and their German taskmasters. Anti-war demonstrations have been held in Constantinople, and troops sent to disperse the demonstrators joined them instead. Attempts have been made on the lives of both Enver Pasha and Talaat Bey.
Rumanian troops are massing on the Bulgarian frontier.
It is reported that twenty German Dreadnoughts hare quitted Kiel.
