SIX THOUSAND MEN

GOING IN NEXT MONTH FOR 9tht AND NEW BATTALIONS DISTRICT QUOTAS GIVEN. The 9th Reinforcements, 3rd and 4th Battalions Trentham Rifle Brigade, 3rd Reinforcements The Trentham Regiment, and the officers and n.c.o.'s for the 10th Reinforcements, who will go into camp next month, w.ill comprise close upon 6000 men. The levy upon the different districts is being made upon the number of recruits passed as fit waiting their turn in each district. Upon this basis the percentages for the various arms to be supplied by the Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago districts have been fixed as follows : — SUPPLIED .BY EACH DISTRICT. Well. Cant. Otago. Mounted Rifles 21.27 37.29 26.70 14.74 3rd and 4th Batt., Rifle Bri.,andlnf. for 9th Reinforcements 28.80 36.57 22.81 11.82 Field Artillery 20.78 44.98 19.17 15.07 Field Enginers ... 36,24 40.60 14.76 8.40 Signal Service 35.19 44.44 16.67 3.70 Army Service Corps ... 41.70 35.45 13.80 9.05 The arm requiring the greatest number, of s men in the above list is the infantry, for which 4300 men are wanted. The next biggest unit is the mounted rifles. It will- be noticed that in both these arms the Wellington military district is being called upon to supply more than a third of the total for each arm, while Auckland in the infantry supplies little more than one-fonrth and less than one-fourth of the mounted rifles. Canterbury comes up better on this occasion, as also does Otago. For the other arms requiring smaller numbers of men, Wellington in three cases is even more to the fore. Thi6, of course, is partly accounted for in the fact that the Wellington military district is the largest in New Zealand. The quotas called up from the various districts for the Bth Reinforcements now 'in camp were as under : — Unit. Auck. Well. Cant. Otago Mounted Rifles 18.62 48.97 19.28 13.13 Infantry ... 26.57 47.53 13.61 12.29 Field Artillery 25.10 42.18 19.88 12.84 Field Engrs. 40.10 35.74 14.80 9.36 Signal Service 46.34 36.59 12.19 4.88 Army Service 42.31 36.61 13.46 10.62 Ambulance ... 36.14 39.30 12.98 11.58 Veterinary ... 56.25 12.50 18.75 12.50 From the above it will be seen that Wellington also showed up well, supplying close upon half the total draft of 3500 men. The above figures speak for themselves and give an emphatic answer to the Auckland contention that Auckland is doing more than her share.
