UNDOUBTED PROOF
HESPERIAN WAS SUNK BY A SUBMARINE. PORTION OP THE TORPEDO RECOVERED. LONDON, 21sf / September. Replying to a semi-official statement from Berlin that it is practically impossible that a submarine sank the Hesperian, as no submarine was in the locality, the Press Bureau states that there is undoubted proof that a German sank ships on the 4th and sth September north and south of the spot where the Hesperian was attacked. That the explosion was due to a torpedo is conclusively proved by a 'fair-sized fragment of a torpedo now in the Admiralty's possession, which was picked up from the Hesperian before she sank.
