LAWN TENNIS

COUNCIL OF WELLINGTON ASSON CIATION. NO COMPETITIONS THIS SEASON. The annual meeting of the council of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association was held last evening, Mr. A. G. Henderson presiding over a good attendance of delegates. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the Chairman made mention of the fact that the war was going to make a great difference to tennis during the coming season. There were not going to be so many players, and this meant a decrease in income. It was possible that the annual match with Canterbury would not be played, while there was a probability the inter-provin-cial matches would not take place. Interclub fixtures would also be affected. Th© opening of the Municipal Tennis Courts at Day's Bay had proved a great boon to players. Special mention was made by the chairman of the work of the secretary (Mr. D. M. Kean), to whom a great deal of credit was due for the success of the two tournaments. The treasurer was to be congratulated on the statement of finances he had drawn up. The motion was seconded and earned. Officers for tho ensuing year were elected as follow : — President, Mr. H. M. Gore ; vice-presidents, Hon. A. L. Herdman, Dean M'Kenna, Rev. T. M'Kenna, and Messrs. R. St. J. Beere, H. Buddie, F. M. B. Fisher, G. N. Goldie, G. A. Hurley, E. H. Morrah, F. Pirani, E. Y. Redward, M. Simcox, and F. P. Instone, and F. Cornet. In the absence of Mr. F. W. Crombie, now in camp at Trentham, Mr. Mitchell moved : — "That this association affiliate with the New Zealand Sports Protection .League." After a short discussion the motion wae lost. Another notice of motion by Mr. Crombie, concerning a ground fee of 6d per player each Saturday, was not moved. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. Mitchell, that no provincial championships be held in Wellington this season. In view of tha present crisis Mr. Putnam moved : — "That no inter-club competitions be arranged by the association during the ensuing season." This was seconded by Mr. Kean, who pointed out that this would not prevent friendly matches being played. The motion was carried unanimously. The question of holding a metropolitan tournament, the proceeds to go to a patriotic fuud, was discussed, and a recommendation was made to the committee to -arrange for such an event if possible.
