DISMISSAL OF TIMBERWORKERS
UNION WILL FIGHT IT TO A FINISH. (Received May 13, 11.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The committee of the Timber Yard Employees' Union discussed the threatened dismissal of single employees, and resolved to fight the matter to a finish. [A cable message published yesterday stated : — "A number of timber merchants have resolved, in order to stimulate recruiting, that no single men will be employed after Friday next. Their positions will be filled by married' men. ) THREE THOUSAND GERMAN PRISONERS "WE KILLED THRICE THAT NUMBER." (Received May 13, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, 12th May. Reuters Paris correspondent states that a wounded officer, referring to the taking prisoner of three thousand Germans, remarked : "We killed thrice that number." Another declared that many Germans on surrendering now fall on their knees and beg for mercy and pardon. The officers act similarly. -
