GERMAN CONSIGNMENTS

GOODS ON THE REMUERA.

On board the Remuera, which arrived from London last night, is a quantity of goods consigned from Germany to importers in the Dominion. The question has arisen as to what is the legal position of these goods. The Minister of. Customs (Hon. F. M. B. Fisher) was asked to-day as to what would be done. Ho replied that if the goods wero consigned to a British allied or neutral subject, they could be delivered to the consignees, but if the consignee was an Austrian or a German subject, the goods would be seized. There might • be points of international law involved, but these could be settled in the courts after the war. With regard to German goods consigned in German vessels seized in Australia, for transhipment" to British allied or neutral subjects in New Zealand, the rule had been fixed that consignees must pay transhipments and transport expenses to New Zealand from Australia.
