OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP

The Sports and Entertainments Committee set /up in connection with the Mayor's patriotic fund has been active in making arrangements for various attractions. A meeting of the committee was held last evening, and some of the fixtures were definitely arranged, while others will be organised later. On Friday evening there will be a, series of lectures in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall, bearing, upon the war. Professor F. P. Wilson, of Victoria College, will lecture on the economic aspect of the war; Professor H. H. Cornish, of Banks'e College, on " Pan-Germanism " ; and Surgeon-Cap-tain Shand, M.8., M.R.C.V.S., on ."The Organisation and Work of the Medical Corps on the Field of Battle." The lectures will be interspersed with patriotic songs by leading Wellington singers. Seats can be booked for the evening at the Dresden. On Sunday evening a grand patriotic concert will be given in the Town Hall, and for this occasion the committee has been' granted permission to break the usual rule, and to make a charge for admission. A very fine programme is : being arranged, and it is hoped that the committee will be able to secure the services of Me. Harry Lauder and Mr. Alexander Watson. On Wednesday, 9th September, an open-air carnival will be Tield in the Basin Reserve. There will be an " Old English " cricket match, between a team reoresenting the Mayor and ex-Maybrs of Wellington and the suburbs, agd another representing the members of Parliament. The players will wear the top hats and dress of the old days of cricket. A second special attraction will be an old-timers' football match, " under Rafferty's rules." It ia intended to get teams composed of experienced footballers use<s to the various games, and " Rafferty's rules " are described as being gloriously indefinite and contradictory, bo that the burlesque- game should be unusually attractive. Stalls and side-shows / will also be provided. Prior to the carnival, a procession of massed bands, leading as many of the public aB care to join in, will march from the city to the Reserve. / • On 19th September a " treasure hunt " will be held at Lyall Bay. Fifty-six Erizes of the total value of £20 will be uried in an enclosed area of sand, and patrons will be charged for admission to the area to see the fun, and for a small extra sum can have a spade and help to provide it." Ample evidence of tha enthusiastic manner with which residents of Lower Hutt have responded to the Countess of Liverpool's appeal is furnished by the fact that the treasurer of the local committee (Mr. William Nicholson) has forwarded the first instalment, namely, £200. THis amount should be added to

considerably during the next few days. The total value of the goods sont in by the Petone committee is estimated at about £200. Details of the contribution are approximately as follows :—IOO: — 100 sleeping caps, 203 shirt*, 700 cholera belts, 200 books and magazines, three dozen pairs of socks, and sundries. The committee has abouV i*f*i in hand, which will probably Be spent in the purchase of men's half-hose Anxious to assist in Taising money for the Patriotic Fund, the members of the Wellington South Drum and Fife Band paraded the principal streets of the city on Saturday evening. They were accompanied by a party ,of Boy Scouts from St. Thomas's Troop, and at the head of the procession a Scout carried the New Zealand Ensign. Patriotic airs were played when on the march, and utops weTe made at various ponite of vantage, where selections were played. Several boys carried collecting boxes, the effort resulting in over £3 being collected. This will be handed over to the Mayoress.
