8 Big Blaze in "Cheapside" I Extract from the "London Drapers' Record April, igi2. A fire which threatened at one time to be most disastrous, and which was particularly serious for those immediately concerned, broke out in the self-contained premises in the occupation of Messrs. Bull and Wahlers, 17, Cheapside, E.G., on Monday, about six o'clock in the morning. It appears the watchman on duty discovered smoke, but as the premises were shut off by massive iron doors he was unable to see into them/ Immediately he Sgave the alarm, and some half a dozen engines were soon on the spot. At times it looked as if the flames would have leaped across the private entrance Which divides No. 17 from the still more extensive block of buildings again at the rear which runs right through to Old 'Change. In their) efforts the Brigade were greatly assisted by the solid character of the masonry, which, despite the intense heat, bore the strain remarkably well, though the smoke and heat penetrated the upper floors, three of which are in the occupation 61 Messrs. Balfdur and, Morris, Ghavereux and Co., and other firms, all of whom hat/c received some damage. On the ground floor in the occupation of Messrs. Robert Mcßride and Co., Limited, much damage has been sustained by smoke and water. Messrs. Bull and Wahlers' fine warehouse . is hardly recognisable, the walls, ceilings, and floors being charred and burned, whilst a portion of the stock, fixtures, and fittings have been saved. , the. cause of tfie outbreak remains unsofved, for every thing- was left in perfect : : order at closing time on Saturday, Various estimates have been made of the total' loss, but these at best can be only ■ ■ conjecture. mV-W.
