ATHENIC ARRIVES FROM LONDON

AX UNPLEASANT JOURNEY. A few minutes after 10 o'clock this morning the Shaw-Savill liner Athenic, from London via Capetown and Hobart, passed round Point Halswell, and anchored in the stream ut 10.2.3. It wa& not until over two hours later that ahu berthed at No. 3, King's Wharf. The Athenic left the Koyal Albert Docks, London, on the morning of Friday, 19th July, and pioceeded to (Jravesend Bunker coal was taken as previously reported. At Plymouth passengers were embarked, and departure taken lor Teneliffe on the 22nd Julj. Fair weather, with moderate to fresh north-east winds, and later southerly winds, was experienced on the run to Capetown. The equator was crossed in lOdeg. W. on Saturday evening, 3rd August. Capetown was left on the 13th August, and coming across to Hobart the vessel met with ttrong to fresh westerly winds with rough and following seas. Later, however, the wind hauled to 8.E., then to N.E., and finally north with rough head seas, rain, and mi&ty weather. On Sunday, Ist September, a hard north-east gale was experienced with a high head sea, which delayed the vessel. Tliis moderated the following day. N Approaching the Tasnianiali coa3t the w'nd blew freth from the northwest, but the sea was moderate. Ho)>art was reached on the 4th September at 7.20 a.m. After discharging pai*sengers, mails, aud cargo and taking in 260 tons of bunker coal, sue left the next morning lor Wellington, When clear of the land the wind tacked from the north to north-east, increasing to gale, with a rising sea. By midnight on Thursday night it blew a hard gale from the E.N.E., with heavy squalls mid a high confused sea,. The ship laboured heavily until noon on. Friday, and came up in another direction a N.N.W. gale. The weather gradually moderated and cleared on approaching New Zealand. Alto, gether the journey was far from a pleasant one. Captain Chae. H. Coulter; filth, Mr C. W- Davidson; sixth, Mr S. J. Richardson; first refrigerating engineer, Mr C. Newton; second, Mr R. Magness; boilermakers, Messrs H. Eastwood and W. Hanlon ; chief steward, Mr W. Hughes. The Athenic disembarks at this port 450 passengers, G26 packages of mails, and a large quantity of general cargo. OTAKI LEFT LONDON. On Sunday last, the glh September, according to cabled advice received at the local office of the New Zealand Shipping Company, the steamer Otaki took her departure from London for Auckland and Wellington. The vessel should reach her destination towards the middle of November. ON THE WEST COAST. The Union Company received word thte morning tiiat the weather on the West Coast had changed for the worse, and that the bar at Greymouth was dangerous. The Rakanoa and Haupiri were held up outside. The prospects for to-day were by no means encouraging. A message from Wettport stated that the Arahura's usual 'trip to Greymouth had been abandoned, and it was hoped to despatch the vc&sel back to Wellington, via Nelson, at 8 o'clock to-night. At the earliest, the Komata would sail for Wellington at 9 a.m. to-morrow, ADDITIONAL PASSENGERS BY ATHENIC. After discharge of a. large general cargo she will sail for Lytteltoiu It is probable that the vessel will get away on Thursday. The Waipori, bound east to Gisbome, passed Wellington Heads at 10.15 this, morning. Mr H; J. Park rejoined the Rosamond .today as piir.sei 1 , while Mr W.
