The first returns which cam© in Jor the Wellington East Electorate gave Mr. M'Laren a substantial starting majority. These were Kilbirnie, Victoria Hall (Adelaide-road), and, to a lesser degree, •St. Mark's '°us»ex-square) and Hataitai. Almost to end ne appeared to bein the lead, but the last booths at Clyde-quay sent up Dr. Newman's stock' immensely, and a final count gave him a majority of 26. Tho result cannot be regarded as absolutely 'Certain, as there are still 93 absent voters' suffrages 1 to count. There were 9 informal votes. *?. ' M'l/ftren. Newman.
