SPEAKER'S SALARY.
LONG AND STRONG OPPOSITION. UNCOMPLIMENTARY EPITHETS. (Received December 15, 10.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Assembly was still discussing the Estimates at an early hour this morning. The item " Speaker's salary " occasioned long and strong opposition. Comment on the Speaker's alleged misdeeds led to uproar, members hurling uncomplimentary epithets across the Chamber. For a while the DeputyChairman of Committees was unable to control members. Finally the item, was forced through by the application of the closure. In the Legislative Council the Government representative announced that it was not intended to proceed, with the Stamp Duties Bill until the House meets in February. The question whether the Government could constitutionally tax boat fares had been raised, and would await the Crown Law Officers* opinion.
